Your Pelvic Floor in 2022
If any of you have been following me on Instagram, you will know I’ve been exploring all things Pelvic Floor. It’s always been an area with many question marks for me because there are contrasting approaches and conflicting theories on how to best work with conditions relating to the pelvic floor in the movement and fitness environment. There is definitely no single, one size fits all solution and what is appropriate for one individual is not for another
So, me being me, I began to investigate! 🤓🧐🤔
When I trained with Nutritious Movement, the approach is founded solidly in Biomechanics and movement ecology and the approach to pelvic floor dysfunction takes a whole body perspective. Ie, problems are not just isolated to the pelvic floor.
For example, tension in your neck and shoulders will definitely be contributing to symptoms of prolapse, urge incontinence and how you breathe will be impacted by how you carry your rib cage and head around and what you wear on your feet determines the feedback and function of your hip joints and how your pelvis moves or doesn’t move.
The whole body approach is definitely relevant and important. Alignment is essential for optimal function and alleviating intra-abdominal pressure and breathing mechanics.
In addition to this, a focussed approach to help with debilitating symptoms like stress incontinence, constipation and prolapse is also needed to help with questions like what do you do first? Where do you go for an assessment to find out what’s going on and what to you need to ask your GP? These are the questions I wanted to understand better. 🧐🤔🤓
So, I have been learning about the implications of perimenopause and menopause, birth injury, episiotomy, c-section, hysterectomy, scar tissue, cancer recovery and consitpation, on pelvic floor function and what this means for, exercise practice, movement in daily living and quality of life whatever stage.
I have been fortunate to attend CPD training with Menopause Pilates and recently qualified as an Adore Your Pelvic Floor Coach which is a NHS Women’s Health Physio endorsed and accredited women's health programme for pilates, yoga and fitness professionals, midwives, GPs, nurses and health professionals, that covers the following:
Emotional and behavioural implications of pelvic floor and continence issues
Pelvic floor awareness, weakness and tension and associated symptoms
Stress, Frequency and Urge Incontinence
Pelvic Organ Prolapse
Bowel issues including constipation
Pelvic health in perimenopause and menopause and GSM (Genitourinary Symptoms of Menopause)
when and where to seek further help
